Photographers use conventional (film) or digital cameras to capture their images. Some use both; however, even film is scanned--bringing it all back to digital. Add to the mix the different monitors, cameras, scanners, etc., along with ICC profiles and Color Sync, and you have either great or poor color management.
Poor color management is more widespread than great color management-- blame it on the ever changing technology.
What doesn't change and is key to great color management are the "viewing" standards used to properly color manage prints & transparencies--known as the D50 (D5000) Standard lighting and viewing conditions (ISO 3664:2000). Basically a photographer needs a consistent "viewing work area" to communicate color--without the consistency, color is a shot in the dark at best--wasted paper, film, time and money.
